How to backup your WhatsApp chat history to the cloud on Android and iPhone
Over the past few years, WhatsApp has become the messaging platform in India, parts of Europe, Brazil, and other markets of the world. While there are many feature-rich messaging platforms out there, WhatsApp wins over all of them with its simplicity and reliability.

The sheer popularity of WhatsApp also means that it is widely used by millions of people across the world for important conversations on a daily basis. Some conversations might be important to users so that they can refer back to it for several reasons, and that makes it necessary that those messages are backed up to the cloud regularly.
While WhatsApp automatically creates chat backups, they are stored locally which means that if you end up damaging your device or losing it, you will have to bid adieu to your WhatsApp chat history as well.
However, WhatsApp provides users with an option to backup the chat history to Google Drive or iCloud, depending on the smartphone you are using. However, since it is buried in the Settings menu, not many people are aware of it. Once you backup your WhatsApp chat history to the cloud, you can easily move it over to your new smartphone. Here's how the whole process works:
How to backup your WhatsApp chat history to Google Drive on Android
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your Android device, tap the 3-dot overflow menu button followed by Settings. From there, head over to Chats -> Chat Backup .
Step 2: Here you will see all the options related to backing up your WhatsApp chat history. As mentioned above, WhatsApp automatically creates a local backup of your chat history. To backup your chats to Google Drive, you will have to select your Google account from under the Account section first. Only those accounts which you have synced to your Android device will show up here. A pop-up menu will now show up on the screen where you will have to tap Allow to provide WhatsApp with the necessary permissions to your Google Drive account.
Step 3: From under the Back Up Over option, select either Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi or cellular depending on your preference. If you want all the videos that you have sent and received over WhatsApp to be backed up to Google Drive, enable the Include Videos option. All other media files that you have sent and received over WhatsApp will now be backed up automatically to Google Drive.
Lastly, you can also change the backup frequency from the Back up to Google Drive option. By default, WhatsApp will back up your chat locally and to Google Drive every night.
You will be able to restore your backed up chats to a new Android device when you first set up WhatsApp on it. Just ensure that you use the same Google account on it as well. WhatsApp will then automatically detect the backed up chats on your Google Drive account and prompt you to restore them.
How to backup your WhatsApp chat history to iCloud on iPhone
WhatsApp for iOS does not allow one to back up their chat history to Google Drive. Instead, you are limited to using Apple's own iCloud. Due to this restriction, you cannot move your WhatsApp chat history from iPhone to an Android device or vice versa. However, you can at least use this method to transfer your WhatsApp chat history from your old iPhone to a new one.
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your iPhone, tap Settings -> Chats -> Chat Backup. Here, you will find all the options related to backing up your WhatsApp chat history to iCloud.
Step 2: Unlike Android, you will see very limited options related to backing up your WhatsApp chat history to iCloud. If you are looking to backup your chat history to the cloud just once, just tap the Back Up Now button. But if you want your WhatsApp conversations to be backed up on a regular basis, select your desired timeframe from under the 'Auto Backup' option.
You can also enable the Include Videos option if you want WhatsApp to backup your videos to iCloud as well. All other images and media files are automatically backed up to iCloud even if you don't select this option.
